Custom software development company in India: what to expect
Question people ask: What should I expect from a custom software development company in India?
Short answer: expect a written scope and fixed quote before work starts, a named tech lead, engineers working in your timezone, weekly demos on a staging URL, code in your own accounts, invoices in your currency without Indian GST on exported services, and a described exit. If any of those is missing, the company is not operating to the standard the best Indian studios already meet. Here is the detail.
How engagements are structured
Indian custom software companies typically offer two models. A fixed-scope project (an MVP, a migration, an integration, an audit) is quoted in writing against a one-page scope, paid in milestones, and delivered by the company’s own team with a lead accountable for the outcome. Dedicated developers join your team by the month, work from your backlog under your lead, and come with a trial period, a replacement commitment and a notice period. Many clients start with the first and continue with the second once the product is live; the comparison of the two covers when each is cheaper.
The timezone question
The gap with the US is nine to thirteen hours; with the UK and Europe, four to five; with the Gulf, one to three; with Singapore and Australia, India is behind by a few hours. A serious company turns this into a plan: an overlap window for your stand-up, full shifts in your hours when the work needs it, decisions turned around within a working day, and everything that matters written down so nobody waits for someone to be at a desk. Ask for the model in writing; “we are available 24/7” is not a model.
Invoicing, tax and payment
For clients outside India, services are exported: invoices are issued in your currency (USD, GBP, EUR, AED and so on) from the Indian entity, usually with zero-rated GST, paid by bank transfer, SWIFT, Wise or a card link. UK and EU clients should ask how the arrangement sits with reverse-charge VAT and, for dedicated engineers, with off-payroll rules; the engineers should be employed by the company, and your contract is with the company. Indian clients are invoiced in INR with GST as applicable. Milestone payments (we use 40/40/20) are normal; fully upfront is not.
Code, IP and data
Repositories, cloud accounts and app-store listings should be in your name from the first commit, with intellectual property assigned to you in the contract. Copyright does not transfer automatically under Indian law, so the clause matters. For personal data, the company should name the privacy law it designs for (DPDP in India, GDPR in Europe, HIPAA safeguards for US health data), sign a DPA or BAA when required, and prefer anonymised data in development.
What the work itself should look like
- Week one: a scoping workshop, a written scope, a clickable prototype, a repository in your GitHub and a staging URL.
- Every week: a demo of working software, not a status report.
- Every change: reviewed by a named tech lead before it merges.
- Launch: deployment to your cloud account with CI/CD, documentation and a fix window.
- Exit: a recorded walkthrough, credentials rotated to you, and the team available for questions afterwards.
Red flags
A price before a conversation. No engineer on the first call. “Unlimited changes.” Code held in the vendor’s accounts “for convenience”. No staging environment. Experience-year claims instead of shipped work you can ask about. No answer to “how does this end?”. The Bengaluru checklist expands each of these.
Where WeBuildStack fits
WeBuildStack is a remote-first custom software development company in Bengaluru, India: 15+ engineers, 100+ projects across React, Angular, Node.js, Python, Java, React Native, Flutter and AWS, Azure and GCP. We build the whole stack, ship an MVP in six weeks with deployment included, send a written fixed quote within 48 hours of a scoping conversation, set team hours to your timezone, and put code and IP in your name from day one. Dedicated developers come with an interview first and a 15-day risk-free trial. The only published prices are web and mobile applications from ₹999 and the entry price on each country page; everything else is quoted against your scope.
